In Somali-Region, we did not have rain for the last 8 months, there is big drought (and nobody knows it in the world), and the few boreholes working are very busy like on the picture. (Photo 7.4.2011, near Tuli village)

Christianisme (orthodox/coptes) is a very important part of Ethipian culture since the 4th century... The small town of Lalibela is famous for several rock churches carved completely in stone, very impressing... The name of this church is St. Georg (like the best beer in Ethiopia). Somaliland Weekend Trip

I am very happy to have gone to exciting Somaliland during the last weekend by road... An unbeliveable peaceful country which does not exist officially as not recognised by nobody because of geopolitical games of the West! It was the most exciting border crossing and the way back in the most cramped bus ride sitting on the jerry can... But a very interesting place - and hardly any tourist unfortunately.  (Foto: 5.3.2011 after the border)

Hargeisa, the capital, nice city with peaceful people, no hassle. As I visited project sites from and with Caritas Switzerland, the funny thing was the obligated escort (2 young guys with old guns who protected me, but I don't know from what). Gode Town in the middle of nowhere

This week I checked the emergency water supply in Gode Town after typhoid outbreak> Gode Town: ca. 50’000 inhabitants in the heart of Somali-Region, but no water supply except the river, no asphalt road, only heat and sand. But fortunately the River Shebele.

The river water is pumped and treated (flocculation with settlement and chlorination) and distributed to the donkey carts for free with the aim to provide thypoid free water.

The donkey carts are the mobile pipe network for the water supply... not very clean and hygienic; hence the effect of the emergency water supply might be doubtable. However, were interesting days.  (All photos 24.2.2011 Gode Town at Shebelle River)

Beautiful village and unusual habits

After a two day visit as technical water advisor for and with SDC (DEZA), I visited the most beautiful place I saw until now in Ethiopia. Only about 200 km from Jijiga. In this village, there are lucky to have a permanent spring, hence, irrigated land. 10 km furhter, the misery is back again. (Fotos 8. Feb. 2011)

And because I don't like to talk about work, I talk about unusual habits. For instance the femal circumcision (Beschneidung), or in UN words: FGM (femal genital mutilation). In the province I am working (Somali-Province), according to Unicef statistics, 97 % of all women are circumcised (often the form of infibulation). I have a lot of interesting discussion all the time because of it. And the main reason for FGM the men tell me always: The sexual desire of women is so strong, you have to reduce it... Driving is not easy, as the road is not only for buses and UN cars, but also for every kind of vehicles, animals and mainly people. Ethiopien people are walking walking and walking (lack of other possibility by the way), dozens of km every day...

Land Use Planning Jijiga

Things are moving. Population of Jijiga is 140'000 today, and 250'000 inhabitants in 2020 (growth of 6 % per year). And all this needs a very ambitous land use planning; water supply, solid and liquid waste, landfill and flood protection, everthing has to be considered... not easy, but my hobby :-)

Different water and first Michi picture

Trinkwasser für Mensch und Tier wird auf dem ariden Land hauptsächlich durch in offenen Behältern (sogenannte Birkas) gesammeltes Regenwasser gewonnen. Die Wasserqualität ist entsprechend ungünstig. Nun arbeite ich daran, eine einfache, sichere, kostengünstige, unterhaltsarme Aufbereitung zu planen und testen...  (near Dembel, 1.12.2010)

Und plötzlich - weit und breit kein Trinkwaser - eine heisse Quelle... zum trinken leider ungeniessbar. Neben mir mein Mitarbeiter, Geologe, jünger als ich, hat aber schon Haus, Kind, Ehefrau (eine), Auto und Töff...

So stellt sich der Schweizer die sogenannte Entwicklungshilfe vor... leider ist es hier auch grad so, und häufig ziemlich erfolglos, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte...

Die lebende UBS Bank! Weil es nur vier Bankfilialen gibt in der Somali-Region (ca. 8x so gross wie die Schweiz), wird alles Geld, insbesondere das geschickte von der Diaspora, in Kamele angelegt. Sobald Geld gebraucht wird, wird ein Kamel verkauft. Und so vermehren sich die Kamele und andere Tiere noch mehr als die Menschen...

I love toilets and railways

Here we go and we are approaching my favorite occupation: Evaluation of toilets (if there is any). On the left, a new latrine in a small town, where they shitted in the field before we hold a sensitisation workshop... (open defecation is very common, but very bad for health... cholera, parasites, etc.)

Oben eine Latrine (Plumpsklo) in einer kleinen Stadt. Rechts neue Latrine einer Primarschule. Und links meine Toilette im Hotel... Chinesische Kunst!

Mythisch, dafür gibts fast kein anderes Wort. Der Startbahnhof der Eisenbahnlinie Äthiopien-Dschibuti (Äthiopien ist ein Binnenland, drum unter anderem auch der Krieg mit Eritrea, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte). Zurück zur Eisenbahn, die Linie Dire Dawa (links der Bahnhof dieser Stadt, zweitgrösste von Äthiopien) - Dschibuti ist rund 300 km lang und verbindet Äthiopien mit dem Meer. Diese sagenumwobene Eisenbahn wurde 1906 eröffnet und massgeblich vom Schweizer Alfred Ilg geplant und gebaut. Später wurde die Linie bis nach Addis Abeba verlängert. (Foto Bahnhof Dire Dawa 18/11/2010)

Schweren Herzens musste ich feststellen, dass die Linie ausser Betrieb ist... nach der Privatierung von 2006... Aber, ein grosses Aber, es sind Arbeiten im Gang, neue Beton-Schwellen liegen schon bereit für die Rehabilitierung. Die Chinesen (die werden immer wieder vorkommen) bezahlen die Wiederinstandstellung (kostet ein Heidengeld). Warum? Dann können sie ihren billigen Mist noch viel besser nach Äthiopien transportieren und verscherbeln und dann sind die Ausgaben schnell amortisiert. Und Äthiopien ist auch froh, weil die Chinesen stellen keine Bedingungen bzgl. Menschenrechte oder solches Zeug... Magic Ethiopian-Djibouti Railway, main station in Dire Dawa and the rails and sleepers from the year 1906. Build by the Swiss Engineer Alfred Ilg. Today, the line is out of service, unfortunately. But the Chinese pay to get the line operational!

Water and Waste in Jijiga

Werkhof / service de l'eau / drilling rig

Meanwhile I can tell you something about work, among other things it is planed to drill 14 boreholes (depth to 350 m!) with the only company (public) ready to drill in this region, as security clearances are needed from different local commanders.

We inspected the company today to check material (casing, screenings) to finalise the bill of quantity. In december, first drilling for over 100'000 USD is scheduled.

Mein neues zu Hause in Jijiga, teile das Häusle mit 3 anderen Männern (ein Kenyaner, ein Somalier und ein Ostschweizer). Schaffen alle bei Unicef.

Zurzeit wird grad neues Kopfsteinplaster vor dem Haus verlegt, das wird schön und ist spannend zum zugucken. Der Eingang zum Haus ist ganz links im Bild, neben dem jungen Mann im roten T-shirt.
