The Somali pirates became quite famous in the world for their ship kidnapping activities. The ransoms paid are in general a good business. The perception of the Western world is that these activities are really bad, not understandable and have to be stopped by military intervention.
But, there is a big but, what many Westerns do forget or ignore or just don’t know. Many Somalis on the coastline lived from fishing. But, as in 1991 the Somali State
- Heavy overfishing in the region mainly by Chinese industrial fishing
- Illegal dumping of nuclear and hazardous waste (hospital, chemicals, poisons) by Western companies
Meanwhile, the fish grounds near the coastline are empty. And by the way, the Tsunami end of 2004 made appear several of these barrels on the coastline…
